Frans van Schooten (Leida, 1615 – ivi, 1660; secondo A. J. Servaas van Roijen [Inventaire des livres formant la bibliothèque de Bénédict Spinoza, publié d’après un document inédit, La Haye, W. C. Tengler / Paris, Paul Monnerat, 1888, p. 154] e Jacob Freudenthal [Die Lebensgeschichte Spinoza’s in Quellenschriften, Urkunden und nichtamtlichen Nachrichten, Verlag von Veit & Comp., Leipzig 1899, p. 278] sarebbe invece morto nel 1661). Maestro di C. Huygens all’Università di Leida; curò la pubblicazione delle opere matematiche di F. Viète (1646). Fu il massimo sostenitore della geometria algebrica di Descartes (cfr. Enciclopedia Biografica Universale, Biblioteca Treccani, La Repubblica-L’Espresso, Roma 2007, vol. XVII, s.v., p. 401). Si interessò anche di prospettiva, e forse in ciò il suo interesse non fu meramente matematico, bensì anche artistico; ancor oggi, infatti, si attribuisce a lui un ritratto (incisione) di Cartesio (cfr. Kirsti Andersen, The Geometry of an Art, Springer, Heidelberg 2007, p. 31). In Michael Bryan, Biographical and Critical Dictionary of Painters and Engravers, London, H. G. Bohn, 1849, pp. 716-717, s.v. Frans van Schooter, si leggono ulteriori precisazioni: «This artist engraved a portrait of Des Cartes, the philosopher, it is inscribed Franciscus Schooter ad viv. del. sculp. This is probably the same as F. van Schooten, a professor of mathematics and philosophy at Leyden in the middle of the seventeenth century. He designed and engraved the portrait of Des Cartes, which is inscribed Franciscus a Schooten Pr. Mat. ad vivum delineavit et fecit, anno 1644, and prefixed to an edition of the “Geometria” of that date»).
